Paying Your Bills After A Work Injury

If your work injuries a so serious that you are taken off of work by a physician, you may be eligible for more than one type of wage replacement benefit.

Workers Compensation Temporary Total Disability Benefits (TTD) 

All California employers are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. If a physician determines that you are unable to work due to your injuries, you may be eligible for TTD wage replacement benefits at 2/3’s of your weekly paycheck, subject to a certain maximum amount.

State Disability Insurance (SDI) 

If the worker’s compensation adjuster is unwilling to pay you TTD benefits or is delaying the payment of TTD while your claim is being investigated, you may be eligible for SDI benefits from the California Employment Development Department at the same rate as TTD for up to 52 weeks. You cannot collect TTD and EDD at the same time.

Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits ( SSDI) 

In addition to the above benefits, If it appears that your injuries will not permit you to return to work, you may be eligible for SSDI benefits through the United States Federal Government. Obtaining these benefits is usually a long process, so the sooner you apply the better. There may be offsets to your monthly SSDI benefits if you are collecting other disability benefits.

Long and Short Term Disability Benefits ( STD and LTD )

Some injured workers have an SDT or LTD policy that they have purchased privately, or as a benefit arranged by the employer. These policies ( often through UNUM or MetLife ) can replace your entire paycheck if you are eligible. Again, there may be offsets if you are collecting other disability benefits.

Credit Card And Other Purchase Benefits

Sometimes there are good things in the “fine print”. Some credit cards and other purchase contracts will provide your relief from payments if you cannot work due to a disability.
